itSMF Speach – CMDB autodiscovery and other fairy tales

I wanted to share the slide deck I used at the 2008 itSMF conference in Neuss / Germany. The presentation went amazingly well and I seem to have hit a nerve with many people by “bashing” some CMDB vendors. I quoted extensivly from the Forrester evaluation of the BMC Atrium CMDB and showed that the figures presented do not add up (who on earth can reduce their failed change implementation rate from 20% to 10%? You would be out of a job in no time at 20% failure rate with 25 hours average repairs of such change). I will blog a bit more on this later. BMC received most of the blame, because they published the following research (external link). But the others are just the same and I said so.

All in all it was a nice conference, even if the number users is still quite low compared to consultants and vendors. Here ist the slide deck (pdf, sorry only in German).
